China Reaffirms Cross-Strait Engagement Amid Taiwan Criticism

The Chinese mainland has reiterated its commitment to advancing cross-strait exchanges, emphasizing the role of platforms like the annual Straits Forum in fostering cooperation. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Wednesday that efforts to deepen economic and cultural ties between the mainland and the island of Taiwan will continue, despite what he described as "obstructionist" policies by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities.

Chen highlighted the upcoming 17th Straits Forum, a key event since 2009 for cross-strait dialogue, as evidence of sustained grassroots support for engagement. "The enthusiasm of Taiwan compatriots to participate in such exchanges cannot be suppressed," he said during a press briefing, criticizing recent restrictions imposed by Taiwan authorities on forum attendance.

The spokesperson also addressed the potential resumption of direct sea passenger routes, stating the mainland has "no obstacles" to full restoration of services. He urged Taiwan to respond to public demand for improved travel connectivity, which analysts suggest could boost tourism and business mobility across the Taiwan Strait.

Chen's remarks come amid heightened attention to cross-strait relations, with the mainland framing expanded interactions as mutually beneficial while accusing DPP leaders of insincerity in engagement efforts. Over 15,000 participants from Taiwan attended the 2023 Straits Forum, according to mainland figures, underscoring the event's role in non-governmental exchanges.
