Over 13.35 million students across the Chinese mainland will sit for the annual national college entrance exam, or gaokao, starting June 7, according to the Ministry of Education. This year’s figure reflects a slight decrease from the record 13.42 million candidates in 2023, underscoring the enduring significance of the high-stakes assessment.
Authorities have prioritized stringent measures to ensure fairness and security. Nationwide operations are targeting exam-related fraud, with enhanced checks for prohibited devices like smartphones and wearable tech. Local governments are coordinating transportation, accommodation, and noise control to create optimal conditions for test-takers.
In a move highlighting inclusivity, Braille papers have been prepared for 16 blind candidates, while over 14,000 students with disabilities will receive tailored support. Psychological counseling services are also available to help students manage stress ahead of the exam, which is widely seen as a pivotal determinant of university admissions and career trajectories.
"The gaokao remains a cornerstone of China’s education system," said a ministry spokesperson, emphasizing efforts to balance rigorous oversight with compassionate assistance for all participants.
