In a landmark effort to strengthen regional healthcare collaboration, the fifth batch of China's medical team in Tonga concluded a pioneering weeklong mission on the island of Eua this week. The initiative, hosted at Niu'eiki Hospital, represents the first time Chinese medical professionals have conducted outreach services on the remote island, signaling a new chapter in cross-Pacific health partnerships.
The six-member team, specializing in gynecology, orthopedics, psychiatry, and other critical fields, provided comprehensive care through joint ward rounds, telemedicine sessions, and community health campaigns. Over 300 patients received treatments, while 200 residents underwent free health screenings targeting prevalent conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Team leader Lu Qingyang from Liaocheng People's Hospital noted the program's focus on early disease detection and tailored interventions for chronic illnesses.
"We prioritized addressing Eua's high rates of skin diseases and bone-related ailments through specialized clinics," Lu told CGTN, highlighting how the team distributed medicines and conducted home visits in isolated villages.
