Taklimakan Rally Intensifies as Racers Tackle Desert Challenge in Xinjiang

The Taklimakan Rally’s second special stage delivered high-octane drama on Thursday as competitors navigated treacherous desert terrain in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The 115-kilometer Alar route—a new addition to this year’s race—tested drivers and riders with soft dunes, unpredictable surfaces, and complex navigation demands.

Czech rider Martin Michek of the Hoto Factory Racing Team defied physical setbacks, securing his second consecutive motorcycle division win despite battling a fever and headache. His time of 2:39:51 highlighted the grueling conditions faced by participants.

In the car category, Zhang Biaobiao and navigator Wang Xiaofeng of the Gansu TV Chiyue Sports Racing Team dominated with a 2:31:07 finish. Four-time champion Han Wei and co-driver Ma Li opted for caution, completing the stage in 2:36:22.

Friday’s third special stage in Keping promises even greater challenges, with a 335-kilometer route set to push endurance and technical skill to new limits. The rally continues to showcase Asia’s growing prominence in global motorsport while highlighting Xinjiang’s unique landscapes.
