Under the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development," the country is showcasing its efforts to protect ecosystems while meeting global climate commitments.
Red Lines for Green Futures
Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu announced that over 30% of the Chinese mainland’s land area now falls under its pioneering "ecological protection redline" system. This initiative safeguards 90% of terrestrial ecosystems and 74% of key wildlife populations, from the snow leopards of Tibet to the tropical rainforests of Hainan.
Forests and Watersheds Rebound
New 2024 data reveals China’s forest coverage has reached 25%, up from 21.7% in 2015, enhancing carbon sequestration capabilities. Water quality improvements also exceeded targets, with 90.4% of surface water meeting Grade III standards or higher – crucial for agriculture and urban water security.
