China, Germany Urged to Champion Free Trade, Resist Protectionism

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for China and Germany to jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism during a phone call with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday. The dialogue highlighted shared priorities in stabilizing global trade and addressing geopolitical challenges.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that China-Germany relations hold “strategic significance beyond bilateral ties,” impacting global economic stability. He urged both nations to resist “so-called de-risking measures” that could disrupt cooperation, while reaffirming China’s stance on the Taiwan question as a core interest. Wang expressed confidence that Germany would continue adhering to the one-China principle.

The ministers discussed opportunities to strengthen China-EU relations ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the EU. Wang called for early resolution of the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), advocating for dialogue to maintain industrial supply chain stability. Wadephul affirmed Germany’s commitment to proactive engagement with China and pledged support for EU-China negotiations.

On the Ukraine crisis, Wang reiterated China’s support for peace talks and a “fair, lasting solution through direct dialogue.” Wadephul welcomed China’s potential role in facilitating ceasefire efforts.
