China’s Museums Hit Record 1.49 Billion Visits in 2024

China's cultural institutions reached new heights in 2024 as museums nationwide welcomed 1.49 billion visitors – equivalent to every resident making at least one museum visit – according to data released by the National Cultural Heritage Administration on International Museum Day.

The figures reveal a 15% year-on-year increase, with free admission offered at over 90% of the country's 7,046 museums. This cultural infrastructure now serves one museum per 200,000 people, reflecting China's commitment to preserving and sharing its 5,000-year heritage.

"This surge demonstrates how museums have become living classrooms," a heritage administration spokesperson noted at the Grand Canal Museum event in Beijing. Institutions hosted 43,000 exhibitions last year, from digital recreations of ancient Silk Road caravans to interactive displays on Ming Dynasty maritime expeditions.

Educational programs proved particularly impactful, with 511,000 activities engaging students and families. Night museum events and augmented reality tours helped attract younger demographics, while special exhibitions on regional customs strengthened connections with diaspora communities.

The trend signals growing opportunities for cultural tourism and creative industries. Business analysts note increased private sector partnerships in museum operations, particularly in digital experience development and cultural IP commercialization.
