In a bold move underscoring China's automotive ambitions, Shanghai-based SAIC Anji Logistics delivered the world’s largest ocean-going car carrier on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s expanding auto export industry. The vessel, capable of transporting up to 9,500 vehicles, embarked on its maiden voyage to Europe carrying 7,000 domestically produced new energy vehicles (NEVs).
SAIC Motor Corporation Limited’s subsidiary designed the carrier to operate at speeds of 19 knots, combining scale with efficiency. “This is just the beginning,” said Zhuang Jingxiong, general manager of SAIC Anji Logistics. “Seven additional carriers will join our fleet, connecting all major global markets across 100 destinations.”
The launch comes as Chinese automakers like BYD and Chery accelerate their international expansions. With domestic NEV sales surging, the demand for robust logistics solutions has intensified, positioning firms like SAIC to capitalize on cross-border trade opportunities.
Analysts note that China’s push to dominate NEV production aligns with its strategic investments in shipping infrastructure. As the vessel charts its course toward Europe, industry observers highlight its symbolic value: a tangible emblem of China’s growing influence in reshaping global automotive supply chains.
