China Calls on U.S. to Lift Tariffs, Ease Tech Controls

China has intensified its appeal to the United States to eliminate Section 232 tariffs and revise export control policies affecting semiconductor technology, urging bilateral cooperation to stabilize international trade frameworks. Speaking at a press conference Thursday, Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian described U.S. tariffs on auto, steel, and aluminum imports as "unilateral protectionism" that damages global supply chains and shared economic interests.

The remarks follow a recent U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security notice restricting global use of Huawei’s Ascend chips under export control rules. He criticized the policy as an overreach that jeopardizes the semiconductor industry’s stability and market fairness. "The U.S. measures harm Chinese enterprises’ legitimate rights and undermine trust in multilateral trade systems," she stated, emphasizing China’s readiness to defend domestic firms through "resolute measures."

The dispute highlights growing friction over technology security and trade frameworks, with Beijing advocating for "equal-footed dialogue" to resolve differences. Analysts note the developments could influence investment decisions in sectors ranging from automotive manufacturing to artificial intelligence hardware.
