A spokesperson for the Chinese mainland has strongly criticized Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, for historical distortions regarding World War II during a press conference on Wednesday. Chen Binhua of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office denounced Lai's remarks as an attempt to equate Taiwan's 'pro-secession actions' with the global fight against fascism, calling it a 'dangerous twisting of history.'
Chen emphasized that Taiwan's return to China following WWII marked a pivotal moment in international postwar agreements. He highlighted China's immense sacrifices during the conflict, referencing 35 million military and civilian casualties in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, which he described as 'a cornerstone of Asia's liberation.'
This year marks the 80th anniversary of both the WWII victory and Taiwan's reintegration into China. 'Eight decades ago, our nation triumphed against invasion. Today, we are even more resolute in safeguarding territorial integrity,' Chen stated, warning that those promoting secessionist agendas 'will face irreversible consequences.'
The spokesperson urged residents of Taiwan to recognize the risks posed by what he termed Lai's 'deceptive narratives' and to support cross-strait efforts toward national rejuvenation. 'No distortion of history can alter the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China,' Chen concluded.
