Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted opportunities for expanded collaboration between China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries during a high-level forum in Beijing this week. Addressing the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, Wang emphasized the need for solidarity among "Global South" partners amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Strengthening Strategic Alignment
Wang, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called for increased mutual support on core interests. "China firmly supports LAC countries in maintaining independence and pursuing development paths suited to their national conditions," he stated, urging joint opposition to "power politics and interference in internal affairs."
Economic Priorities Take Center Stage
The foreign minister outlined plans to deepen cooperation through China's Belt and Road Initiative and Global Development Initiative, focusing on infrastructure connectivity and stabilizing supply chains. Security collaboration, including cybersecurity and counterterrorism efforts, also featured in proposed partnership areas.
Cultural Bridges and Multilateral Vision
Wang stressed the importance of cultural exchanges to "consolidate the foundation of China-LAC friendship," while advocating strengthened multilateral coordination through UN-centered frameworks. LAC representatives at the forum welcomed China's development model as complementary to regional priorities, reaffirming their commitment to the one-China principle and non-interference norms.
