China, Brazil Strengthen Ties in High-Level Legislative Exchange

China's top legislator Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Beijing on Tuesday, signaling a renewed commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation and multilateral engagement. The talks focused on advancing strategic collaboration, upholding free trade, and addressing global challenges such as climate change.

Zhao emphasized China's willingness to work with Brazil to 'enrich the content of the China-Brazil community with a shared future,' highlighting plans to leverage legislative cooperation in implementing consensus reached by the two countries' leaders. The NPC is ready to enhance exchanges in legislative and supervisory experience with the Brazilian Congress, providing a legal foundation for practical cooperation, he stated.

President Lula echoed the sentiment, stressing Brazil’s intent to bolster governance exchanges and joint advocacy for multilateralism. We oppose protectionism and are committed to fostering sustainable development and a shared future for our nations, he said. The discussions also underscored climate collaboration, aligning with both nations' climate goals.

The meeting underscores Beijing’s broader diplomatic push to fortify partnerships with Global South nations, blending economic pragmatism with geopolitical coordination on global platforms.
