At the closing of IMDEX Asia 2025, one of Asia's premier maritime defense exhibitions, China’s domestically developed Type 054A guided missile frigate Xuchang drew crowds of over 1,000 visitors during a rare public tour in Singapore. The event spotlighted China’s naval prowess and cultural diplomacy through open decks and live demonstrations.
Floating Ambassadors of Innovation
The 4,000-tonne Xuchang and Type 082II minesweeper Chishui represented China's advancements in artificial intelligence, ship power systems, and maritime defense technology. Visitors explored missile systems and radar installations while sailors detailed the vessels’ roles in naval operations, including anti-missile missions and maritime escorts since 2017.
Cultural Exchange on the Decks
Beyond hardware displays, sailors showcased Chinese traditions during a Thursday evening reception. Performances ranged from the zheng (a classical stringed instrument) and Sichuan Opera's face-changing artistry to Tai Chi demonstrations. A Singaporean naval soldier remarked, "I experienced a lot of diversity in cultural stuff—it’s very fortunate to come."
Global Engagement
International attendees, including overseas Chinese and foreign military personnel, praised the immersive experience. A Chinese student in Singapore noted, "It’s much larger than I imagined… I see many kinds of weapons I’ve never seen before." The event underscored China’s strategy of fostering open dialogue and technical collaboration in maritime security.
The exhibition attracted over 100 global companies, highlighting trends in naval innovation while reinforcing Singapore’s role as a hub for Asia-Pacific defense exchanges.
