Xi, EU Leaders Mark 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties with Mutual Praise

Chinese President Xi Jinping and top European Union officials commemorated five decades of diplomatic relations Tuesday through exchanged congratulatory messages that highlighted growing economic cooperation and shared commitments to global stability.

In his message to European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Xi emphasized China's long-standing view of Europe as a “comprehensive strategic partner,” while EU leaders acknowledged Beijing's role in addressing climate change and international trade challenges.

The anniversary comes as bilateral trade surpassed $847 billion in 2023, with the EU remaining China’s second-largest trading partner. Observers note the relationship has evolved from basic trade exchanges to complex collaborations in green technology, artificial intelligence, and multilateral governance reforms.

Xi stressed the need to “uphold the principle of mutual benefit” amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, while EU leaders called for “intensified dialogue” on digital economy regulations and sustainable development goals. Both sides reaffirmed commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement ahead of critical UN environmental negotiations.
