China’s Top Legislator Stresses Strengthened Law Implementation for Deputies

China's top legislator Zhao Leji has called for rigorous implementation of the newly revised Law on Deputies, emphasizing enhanced legal safeguards for lawmakers in exercising their duties and addressing public priorities. The remarks were delivered during a symposium at the ongoing 15th session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

Zhao, who chairs the NPC Standing Committee and serves on the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the significance of the amendments adopted in March. The revisions aim to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure lawmakers' alignment with public interests while upholding the Party's leadership.

The updated law reinforces the framework for deputies to perform duties, respond to critical societal concerns, and maintain close engagement with constituencies. Zhao urged lawmakers to prioritize public accountability and foster transparency, underscoring the role of legal institutions in driving governance efficiency.
