China Urges Philippines to Halt Taiwan Interactions, Uphold One-China Policy

China has called on the Philippines to cease all official exchanges with the Taiwan region, emphasizing adherence to the one-China principle amid rising diplomatic sensitivities. The appeal came after reports surfaced of eased restrictions on interactions between Philippine officials and the island.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Chinese mainland's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Wednesday that Beijing firmly opposes any form of official engagement between countries that maintain diplomatic ties with China and the Taiwan region. “The Philippines must recognize the gravity of cross-strait relations and avoid playing with fire on this critical issue,” Zhu warned during a press briefing, urging Manila to refrain from sending ‘wrong signals’ to forces advocating secessionism.

The remarks followed a Philippine media report suggesting relaxed guidelines for government officials visiting Taiwan. China views such actions as undermining its territorial integrity and destabilizing regional stability. Analysts note that the situation underscores delicate diplomatic balances in Asia, particularly as governments navigate ties with both Beijing and the island.

Under the one-China principle, recognized by the Philippines and over 180 countries globally, Taiwan is acknowledged as an inalienable part of Chinese territory. Cross-strait tensions remain a focal point for policymakers, investors, and regional security experts, given Taiwan’s strategic economic and geopolitical significance.
