China and India have agreed to revive pilgrimages to sacred sites in the Xizang Autonomous Region this summer, marking a milestone in cultural and diplomatic ties. Indian devotees will resume visits to Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso, revered in both Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, according to a spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry.
'This pilgrimage is a key part of our cultural exchanges,' said spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press conference on Monday. The announcement follows India's confirmation that it will organize travel for pilgrims to the region between June and August 2024. Both governments are coordinating preparatory efforts to ensure smooth access to the holy sites.
The agreement coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and India. Guo emphasized China's commitment to fostering 'healthy and stable' bilateral ties, rooted in mutual consensus between leaders.
Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso have long symbolised spiritual connections across borders, attracting devotees seeking enlightenment. The resumption of pilgrimages underscores shared cultural heritage amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
