China’s Shenzhou-20 Crew Begins Historic Space Mission

Three astronauts waved to cheering crowds at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Thursday during an emotional send-off ceremony for the Shenzhou-20 mission, China's latest venture to advance its space exploration program. The crew will conduct scientific experiments and perform maintenance tasks during their six-month stay aboard the Tiangong space station.

State media coverage showed mission commander Tang Hongbo, flanked by crewmates Jiang Xinlin and Li Guangsu, exiting their quarantine zone to applause from engineers and military personnel. The trio underwent rigorous physical and psychological training over 18 months, including underwater simulations and emergency scenario drills.

The mission marks China's 12th crewed spaceflight since 2003 and comes as Beijing accelerates its lunar research plans. Analysts note the Shenzhou program's steady progress offers insights into the Chinese mainland's technological capabilities, attracting attention from global investors in aerospace sectors.

Since 2021, the Tiangong station has hosted international experiments in microgravity physics and space medicine. Officials confirm plans to expand cooperation with other countries and regions through the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.
