China's nuclear power infrastructure has achieved a significant milestone, with 102 operational units on the Chinese mainland contributing to its position as the world's largest nuclear energy operator by installed capacity, authorities revealed Wednesday.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment reported 58 licensed units currently in operation, delivering 113 million kilowatts of electricity. Officials emphasized that these facilities have collectively operated safely for over 600 reactor-years—a metric representing individual reactor operation over one full year.
Safety Milestones & Global Recognition
Hou Yingdong, a ministry representative, confirmed China's consistent top-tier safety rankings in the World Association of Nuclear Operators' performance indexes. "From site selection to disaster preparedness, every aspect prioritizes security," Hou stated, noting that all plants are strategically located away from seismic zones and designed to withstand extreme weather events.
Environmental Assurance
Li Zhiguo, another ministry official, highlighted China's comprehensive radiation monitoring network—the largest globally—which maintains rigorous environmental standards around nuclear facilities. Data shows stable radiation levels across operational sites, reinforcing confidence in the sector's safety protocols. The achievement positions nuclear energy as a key component in China’s broader energy transition strategy.
