China-LAC Science Partnership Enters New Era of Innovation

China and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are setting a robust framework for advancing science and technology collaboration, with a growing emphasis on sustainability and digital transformation. Speaking at the inaugural China-LAC Science Day in Beijing, Science and Technology Minister Yin Hejun highlighted the region’s expanding partnership, which now spans traditional sectors and cutting-edge fields like 5G and biomedicine.

A Multi-Faceted Partnership

Recent years have seen China-LAC sci-tech cooperation evolve into a multi-tiered network involving governments, institutions, and businesses. Traditional sectors like agriculture and energy have benefited from upgraded technological integration, while new areas—such as digital innovation, new energy materials, and life sciences—are driving fresh opportunities for growth.

Infrastructure for Innovation

Key milestones include the launch of the China-LAC Technology Transfer Center (2023) and the China-LAC Sustainable Food Innovation Center (2024). These platforms aim to address shared challenges, from food security to climate resilience, by fostering joint research and knowledge exchange.

Commitment to Open Collaboration

Minister Yin emphasized China’s dedication to open, equitable, and non-discriminatory cooperation. By prioritizing inclusivity and addressing regional needs, the partnership seeks to amplify innovation’s role in achieving sustainable development goals across LAC countries.
