Sun Yingsha Defends ITTF World Cup Title, Calderano Makes History

China’s table tennis superstar Sun Yingsha clinched her second consecutive women’s singles crown at the ITTF World Cup in Macao on Sunday, solidifying her status as the sport’s leading force. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Hugo Calderano etched his name into history as the first South American to claim the men’s singles trophy at the prestigious event.

Sun dominated compatriot Kuai Man with a decisive 4-0 victory in the final, showcasing her technical precision and tactical mastery. Calderano delivered a thrilling comeback against China’s Lin Shidong, overturning an early deficit to secure a 4-1 triumph and his maiden World Cup title.

‘Lin Shidong started really strong, but I found solutions. Winning the second game boosted my confidence,’ Calderano reflected, praising the growing intensity of international competition. ‘Chinese players still dominate, but everyone is working harder. More teams may challenge them, but China remains the best.’

Sun emphasized post-match recovery as her immediate focus ahead of May’s ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha. ‘I hope to perform even better there,’ she said, acknowledging the heightened challenge of facing more top players.

The results underscore China’s continued table tennis prowess while highlighting rising global competitors—a dynamic poised to shape future tournaments.
