China Urges Philippines: Avoid ‘Playing With Fire’ in Military Drills With U.S.

China has issued a stern warning to the Philippines over its joint military exercises with the United States, urging Manila to refrain from actions that could escalate regional tensions. On Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that collaborating with external powers to deploy strategic weapons 'undermines regional stability and economic growth,' framing such moves as counterproductive to regional unity.

The remarks came during a media briefing addressing U.S.-Philippines exercises scheduled across multiple Philippine locations from April 21 to May 9. Guo criticized the drills as emblematic of unilateralism and hegemonic interference, stating that 'countries in the region seek cooperation, not confrontation.'

Adding to the geopolitical complexity, reports indicate a U.S. missile system is being positioned near waters separating the Chinese mainland and the Philippines. Guo reiterated China's stance that the Taiwan question is a 'core interest' and urged parties to avoid exploiting it to 'provoke confrontation.' He warned, 'Those who play with fire will perish by it,' signaling Beijing's resolve to counter perceived threats to sovereignty and security.

The comments underscore deepening concerns over foreign military activity in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, areas pivotal to regional trade and diplomacy. Analysts suggest Beijing's response reflects broader efforts to discourage alliances it views as destabilizing to Asia's security framework.
