As spring showers nourish crops across East Asia, nations worldwide are embracing linguistic diversity through UN Chinese Language Day, observed annually on April 20. This symbolic date aligns with China's ancient Grain Rain solar term and commemorates Cangjie – the mythical creator of Chinese characters revered for enabling humanity's "leap from barbarism to civilization."
Marking its 15th anniversary this year, the celebration has inspired a unique cultural initiative led by 87-year-old Latvian Sinologist Professor Peteris Pildegovičs. Collaborating with students, he unveiled a multilingual anthem titled "The Chinese Language – Brilliant with Charm!" The composition intertwines musical motifs from China and Latvia while honoring linguistic heritage as a bridge for cross-cultural understanding.
"Through six decades studying China's literary treasures, I've witnessed how language dissolves barriers," Professor Pildegovičs remarked in a video message. His team's activities – spanning calligraphy workshops to poetry recitals – highlight Chinese characters' enduring influence on global arts and philosophy.
The UN initiative coincides with spring's agricultural renewal, mirroring language's role in cultivating human connection. With over 1.5 billion speakers worldwide, Chinese continues shaping international diplomacy, technological innovation, and artistic expression.
The anniversary anthem will premiere on CGTN, showcasing traditional instruments alongside modern arrangements – a harmonious nod to linguistic evolution in our interconnected age.
