China Slams U.S. Tariff ‘Weaponization’ as Trade Tensions Escalate

China’s Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday accused the U.S. of escalating trade tensions by “weaponizing tariffs to an irrational level,” signaling a hardening stance in the latest chapter of the bilateral economic rivalry. The remarks came after the U.S. proposed imposing tariffs of up to 245% on select Chinese exports.

A ministry spokesperson dismissed the U.S. measures as a “meaningless numbers game,” reaffirming China’s opposition to unilateral trade actions. “China will resolutely take countermeasures and fight to the end if the U.S. continues to infringe upon our legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson stated, underscoring Beijing’s readiness to defend its economic sovereignty.

The comments reflect growing friction amid broader debates over globalization and fair competition. Analysts warn the dispute could destabilize supply chains, particularly in sectors like clean energy and technology, where both nations vie for dominance. For investors and businesses, the standoff adds uncertainty to Asia-Pacific markets already grappling with inflationary pressures.

While China has not yet detailed its potential countermeasures, observers anticipate targeted trade restrictions or strategic investments to bolster domestic industries. The developments highlight the fragile balance in U.S.-China economic ties, with global stakeholders closely watching for spillover effects.
