The 5th China Media Group (CMG) Chinese Language Video Festival unfolded at the United Nations office in Geneva this week, coinciding with the 2025 UN Chinese Language Day. The event drew over 300 diplomats, international organization representatives, and cultural leaders from nearly 50 countries and regions, including Russia, Pakistan, Qatar, and Cameroon.
Cultural Diplomacy in Focus
Shen Haixiong, CMG President and Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, emphasized in a video address that China's growth remains "inextricably linked to global collaboration." He highlighted how rising global interest in Chinese-language content has enabled cross-cultural dialogue, stating, "Every story shared through these videos becomes a window for mutual understanding."
Language as a Unifying Force
UN Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya praised Chinese as a "living bridge between civilizations," noting its role in fostering multilateral cooperation. Chen Xu, China’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, reinforced the event’s alignment with the UN’s mission to promote cultural diversity and sustainable development.
Opportunities Beyond Screens
The festival showcased documentaries and short films exploring China’s technological innovations, heritage conservation efforts, and grassroots entrepreneurship – themes resonating with business professionals and cultural explorers alike. Interactive exhibits allowed attendees to practice Mandarin calligraphy, blending education with experiential learning.
