Xi Outlines China-Vietnam ‘Shared Future’ Ahead of State Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized historic solidarity and future-focused collaboration between China and Vietnam in a signed article published in Vietnam's Nhan Dan newspaper on Monday, ahead of his state visit marking 75 years of diplomatic ties. The article, titled "Building on Past Achievements and Making New Advances in Pursuit of Shared Goals," highlights five pillars for deepening the "China-Vietnam community with a shared future."

"The friendship between Vietnam and China is so profound because we are both comrades and brothers,"

Xi wrote, invoking shared revolutionary legacies from anti-colonial struggles to modern economic partnerships. He underscored China's position as Vietnam's largest trading partner for over two decades, with bilateral trade surpassing $260 billion in 2024.

Key areas for cooperation include:

  • Accelerating infrastructure projects like cross-border railways and smart ports
  • Expanding clean energy initiatives, including waste-to-energy plants
  • Boosting cultural ties through tourism and youth exchanges
  • Enhancing multilateral coordination in regional forums
  • Advancing maritime negotiations to ensure regional stability

The article arrives amid strengthened high-level engagements, including recent party-to-party dialogues and strategic security coordination. Xi reiterated China's commitment to "steady development of the socialist cause" while promoting Vietnam's role in Asia's modernization drive.
