China Calls on IAEA to Tackle Global Nuclear Challenges, Stresses Unity

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to uphold its responsibility in addressing critical nuclear challenges during a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in Beijing on Friday. The discussions highlighted China's push for multilateral cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the IAEA's role in safeguarding international norms, preventing nuclear proliferation, and ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He specifically cited concerns over the Iranian nuclear issue, the AUKUS nuclear submarine pact involving the U.S., U.K., and Australia, and Japan's discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water.

'The international community must unite to reject unilateralism and power politics,' Wang stated, warning that a failure to uphold sovereign equality and justice could lead to a 'law of the jungle' scenario, disproportionately affecting smaller nations.

Grossi praised China's commitment to global stability and its advancements in peaceful nuclear applications. 'China is a vital partner in promoting multilateralism,' he said, pledging to deepen cooperation with Beijing on managing nuclear-related hotspots.

The meeting underscored China's stance on reinforcing the United Nations' central role in maintaining what it called a fair international order. Analysts suggest the dialogue reflects broader efforts to balance technological development with nuclear governance as global debates over energy security intensify.
