Spain’s Sanchez in China Visit: Trade, Talks, and Global Partnerships

Spain's PM Heads to China as Bilateral Ties Reach Milestones

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrives in China this week for his third visit in three years, coinciding with dual anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations and the 20th year of the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership. The trip includes meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, with talks expected to focus on economic collaboration, green technology, and global governance amid shifting trade dynamics.

Economic Priorities Take Center Stage

Trade between China and Spain surged 28% between 2020 and 2023, reaching $48.6 billion. A highlight of recent collaborations includes the Chery Automobile and Ebro-EV Motors joint venture in Barcelona, which has revitalized Spain’s automotive sector through electric vehicle innovation while creating local jobs. 'This partnership shows how complementary strengths can drive mutual progress,' noted National People’s Congress spokesperson Lou Qinjian earlier this year.

Navigating Global Trade Tensions

Against the backdrop of U.S. tariff hikes, Sánchez emphasized the need for Europe to 'adapt' by strengthening ties with non-traditional partners. During a stop in Vietnam, he urged a 'revised EU-China dynamic.' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian echoed this sentiment, stating that China and Spain 'must champion multilateralism' to stabilize global supply chains and counter fragmentation.

EU-China Relations: A Strategic Lever

Spain’s role as the EU’s fourth-largest economy positions it as a key bridge in China-EU relations. Recent coordination between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reinforces shared commitments to WTO principles. Analysts suggest Sánchez’s visit could catalyze broader EU efforts to balance economic sovereignty with open markets.
