China’s Qingming Holiday Travel to Hit Record 790 Million Trips

China is set to witness approximately 790 million cross-regional trips during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday, according to data released by the Ministry of Transport on Sunday. This marks the highest travel volume recorded for the same period, underscoring growing domestic mobility as economic and social activities rebound.

The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, traditionally sees millions traveling to honor ancestors and enjoy spring outings. Analysts suggest the surge reflects not only cultural heritage but also rising consumer confidence. Transportation hubs are ramping up services, with road trips expected to account for 88% of journeys, followed by rail and air travel.

For investors, the data signals renewed economic vitality, particularly in tourism and hospitality sectors. Academics note the trend highlights evolving post-pandemic priorities among residents of the Chinese mainland, blending tradition with leisure-driven travel. Meanwhile, Asian diaspora communities observe these developments as a window into home-country customs and resilience.
