China has introduced immediate export restrictions on seven medium and heavy rare earth elements, a decision announced Friday by the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs. The list includes samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium – critical components in high-tech industries ranging from semiconductors to defense systems.
A Ministry of Commerce spokesperson stated the measures aim to protect national security and align with international non-proliferation commitments. "These dual-use materials require responsible oversight," the spokesperson noted, emphasizing that such controls mirror global trade practices.
The announcement comes amid growing demand for rare earths in renewable energy and electric vehicle manufacturing. Analysts suggest the move could reshape global supply chains, prompting businesses to reassess sourcing strategies.
While reinforcing domestic safeguards, China reiterated its commitment to international cooperation: "We remain open to dialogue on compliant trade mechanisms," the spokesperson added, highlighting potential bilateral engagements to address market concerns.
