The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge recorded a historic surge in cross-border activity during the first quarter of 2025, with over 7.5 million passenger trips processed at its Zhuhai port — a 23% year-on-year increase. Vehicle traffic also soared to 1.56 million trips, up 31%, according to official data released Monday.
This 55-kilometer engineering marvel, which connects Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, continues to strengthen regional integration. The surge reflects growing economic and social ties, with 54.6% of passenger trips attributed to Hong Kong and Macao residents traveling to the Chinese mainland. Vehicle crossings from both regions jumped 34%, totaling 880,000 trips.
Foreign visitor numbers reached new heights with 120,000 international trips recorded — 20,000 of which utilized China's expanded visa-free transit policies introduced in late 2023. The simplified entry framework facilitated a 122% spike in visa-exempt travel compared to 2024.
Analysts highlight the bridge's role in supporting China's broader connectivity goals. "These figures demonstrate how infrastructure can drive people-centered development," said transport economist Li Wei. "Enhanced mobility creates opportunities for business collaboration, cultural exchange, and tourism growth across the Greater Bay Area."
