China Aims to Boost Legal Support for Belt and Road Global Partnerships

China has announced plans to strengthen legal cooperation with Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries, emphasizing the role of rule of law in ensuring the initiative’s sustainable growth. Chen Wenqing, a senior official from the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the importance of legal safeguards during an international forum on BRI legal services held on Sunday.

Chen stressed that over 150 participating countries and regions rely on aligned legal frameworks to foster trust and streamline cross-border collaboration. “The rule of law is both a cornerstone for international cooperation and a prerequisite for shared development,” he stated, underscoring recent efforts to enhance judicial coordination, including the establishment of international commercial courts and arbitration centers.

China’s latest initiatives include aligning legal standards, creating dispute-resolution mechanisms, and expanding opportunities for legal talent exchange. Chen added that these steps aim to integrate global legal resources and build a “broader platform” for multilateral cooperation among BRI partners.

The pledge reflects Beijing’s broader strategy to address challenges in cross-border infrastructure and trade projects by prioritizing transparency and legal predictability. Analysts suggest the move could attract businesses and investors seeking stable frameworks for long-term engagements in Asia and beyond.
