China Denies Ex-Philippine Leader Duterte’s Asylum Claims

China has officially dismissed reports suggesting former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sought political asylum ahead of his recent detention, calling the claims "fabricated." A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified on Monday that neither Duterte nor his family has ever submitted an asylum application.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed media inquiries following speculation from unnamed sources linking Duterte’s March visit to Hong Kong to the alleged asylum request. Guo emphasized the trip was strictly a personal vacation, with authorities confirming no official engagement took place.

"Relevant parties in the Philippines have provided explanations regarding this rumor," said Guo, urging media organizations to verify information responsibly. The remarks follow Duterte’s March 11 detention in Manila under an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant tied to his controversial anti-drug campaign.

The ICC issued the warrant over allegations of human rights violations during Duterte’s presidency, a move the former leader has openly contested. While the case stirs international debate, analysts note China’s response underscores its commitment to non-interference in sovereign legal matters.

This development highlights evolving geopolitical dynamics in Southeast Asia, where cross-border judicial actions increasingly intersect with diplomatic protocols.
