Ne Zha Franchise Sets Chinese Box Office Record at 20 Billion Yuan

China's animated film industry has a new record-holder: the Ne Zha franchise has crossed 20 billion yuan ($2.79 billion) in total box office earnings, cementing its place in cinematic history. The latest installment, Ne Zha 2, contributed 15.3 billion yuan alone after dominating theaters since its January 29 release during Lunar New Year celebrations.

Director Yang Yu has become the first filmmaker in China to helm a franchise surpassing this milestone. The original 2019 film laid the groundwork with 5.035 billion yuan, while its sequel shattered expectations by topping global animation charts within three weeks of release.

The film's success continues to grow, with screenings extended through April 30 on the Chinese mainland. Its global performance—currently fifth worldwide, per pre-sales and overseas figures—highlights China’s expanding influence in entertainment markets.

Industry analysts note the franchise's blend of mythological storytelling and cutting-edge animation resonates with audiences, offering insights into China’s cultural priorities and creative economy. For international investors, the numbers signal robust consumer spending, while diaspora communities applaud the modernization of traditional folklore.
