South China’s Largest Hydrogen Hub Launches in Guangzhou

China’s drive toward clean energy has reached a milestone with the opening of the country’s largest hydrogen fuel cell supply center in Guangzhou, operated by state-owned energy giant Sinopec. The newly expanded facility, now capable of producing 15 tonnes of hydrogen per day at 99.999% purity, aims to accelerate the development of green industries across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The hub’s annual output of 5,100 tonnes marks a near-fourfold increase from its pre-expansion capacity, positioning it as a cornerstone for the region’s transition to hydrogen-powered transportation and manufacturing. According to Science and Technology Daily, the project underscores Sinopec’s strategic shift toward hydrogen infrastructure, with 11 similar centers and 142 refueling stations now operational nationwide.

Analysts say the expansion aligns with China’s broader goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The Greater Bay Area—a tech and economic powerhouse—is expected to see reduced emissions in logistics and public transit as hydrogen adoption grows. Sinopec’s investments highlight rising confidence in hydrogen’s role as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in heavy industries.

This development comes amid increasing global interest in hydrogen energy, with Asia leading in infrastructure investments. The Guangzhou hub’s high-purity output could also attract international partnerships, further integrating the region into global clean energy supply chains.
