A groundbreaking wooden robotic arm installation, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, is captivating visitors at Beijing's Nanchizi Museum. Titled "Well Thought-Out Strategy", the artwork by Tang Zhengwei uses precise, repetitive motions to cut paper strips into cascading patterns, redefining the ancient art of paper-cutting.
The installation features five layered sections, each representing stages of conceptual refinement. Tang’s mechanical creation transforms ordinary paper strips into dynamic waves that symbolically "converge and integrate" into a cohesive finale, highlighting paper-cutting’s cultural significance and artistic tension. "I aimed to distill the purest language of this traditional art," Tang explained, emphasizing the interplay between precision and organic creativity.
Part of the Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition, the work bridges China’s intangible cultural heritage with avant-garde innovation. The exhibition underscores Beijing’s growing role as a hub for cross-disciplinary artistic exploration, attracting global audiences interested in Asia’s evolving cultural narratives.
