China Urges U.S. to Reverse ‘Unjust’ Tariffs Linked to Fentanyl

China's Ministry of Commerce has demanded the U.S. revoke newly imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, calling the 20% levy "unfounded" and a reflection of "protectionism, unilateralism, and bullying." The dispute follows Washington's announcement of incremental tariffs, including a 10% hike this week, citing concerns over fentanyl precursor chemicals.

The U.S. government linked its decision to China's role in fentanyl-related substance exports, a claim Beijing fiercely disputes. On Tuesday, China's State Council Information Office released a white paper, "Controlling Fentanyl-Related Substances – China's Contribution," outlining stringent regulatory measures and collaboration with international drug control agencies.

"China has implemented the world's strictest supervision of fentanyl-related substances," the Ministry of Commerce stated, emphasizing its commitment to global anti-narcotics efforts. Analysts warn the tariff escalation could strain already tense trade relations, with businesses and investors bracing for ripple effects across Asian supply chains.
