Digital Art Reimagines Ancient Heroine Mu Guiying in Beijing Exhibit

In Beijing’s historic Nanchizi Museum, a groundbreaking installation merges centuries-old storytelling with cutting-edge technology to breathe new life into the legend of Mu Guiying, one of China’s most revered heroines. Titled \"Shadow Lamp: In Front of the Mirror,\" the work by Chinese artist Li Hanxuan reimagines a quiet, intimate moment from the legendary warrior’s life through interactive digital shadow puppetry.

The immersive exhibit invites visitors to witness Mu Guiying preparing for battle in a private, contemplative setting. Drawing from the traditional shadow play \"Mu Guiying Takes Command,\" Li integrates motion sensors and projection mapping to transform viewers into active participants, blurring the lines between observer and storyteller.

Mu Guiying, a symbol of courage and wisdom from the \"Generals of the Yang Family Legends,\" has inspired cultural narratives for generations. The installation’s focus on her vulnerability—a rare departure from battlefield portrayals—offers fresh perspective on gender roles in historical storytelling.

Part of the three-month \"Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition,\" the work reflects growing efforts to preserve intangible cultural heritage through technological innovation. Nanchizi Museum, located near Beijing’s Forbidden City, has become a hub for such cross-temporal dialogues.
