As the annual Two Sessions – China’s pivotal political meetings – unfold in Beijing, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee commenced its session on Tuesday, bringing together over 2,000 political advisors to deliberate on national priorities. These advisors, representing diverse sectors and ethnic groups, play a critical role in shaping policy recommendations for lawmakers.

What Matters to China’s Advisors?

CPPCC members at the opening session emphasized innovation-driven economic growth, rural healthcare reforms, and sustainable urbanization as key agenda items. CGTN reporter Li Zhao, present at the meeting, noted a heightened focus on addressing challenges in cross-strait relations, with multiple advisors urging strengthened economic cooperation between the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region.

One advisor from the technology sector highlighted the need for “globally competitive talent pools to advance AI research,” while a healthcare representative stressed stabilizing medical resource distribution in remote areas. Others called for clearer pathways to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, reflecting China’s balancing act between development and environmental goals.

Li Zhao observed that discussions also touched on enhancing cultural exchanges to boost international tourism, aligning with efforts to revitalize post-pandemic economic ties across Asia. The outcomes of these deliberations will inform China’s policy roadmap for the year ahead.
