Xinjiang Celebrates Traditional Goat-Grabbing Sport in Yili Valley

Goat-grabbing, also known as buzkashi, is a vibrant traditional folk sport deeply rooted in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Participants, riding yaks, compete to grab a processed goat skin, showcasing strength, skill, and teamwork.

This thrilling sport has been passed down through generations, embodying the rich cultural heritage of the region. In recognition of its significance, buzkashi was included in 2009’s list of intangible cultural heritage of northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

On February 22, enthusiasts and locals gathered in Xinjiang's picturesque Yili Valley to witness an exciting buzkashi contest. The event highlighted the enduring legacy and dynamic spirit of this traditional sport, attracting audiences from diverse backgrounds.
