South China’s Guangdong Province Begins Construction of Advanced Nuclear Reactor

South China's Guangdong Province has commenced the construction of a new nuclear reactor in the city of Lufeng, as announced by the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) on Monday.

The No. 1 reactor, part of an ambitious nuclear power project, will utilize CAP1000—a third-generation pressurized water reactor design. This construction will incorporate advanced modular construction techniques, digital building technologies, and automated welding, all aimed at enhancing safety and economic efficiency.

The broader project envisions the development of six reactors in total. Construction of the No. 5 and No. 6 reactors began in 2022 and 2023, respectively, employing domestically designed third-generation Hualong One nuclear technology.

Upon the completion and full operation of all six reactors, the project is expected to generate approximately 52 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This significant energy output is projected to save 15.77 million tonnes of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 42.69 million tonnes each year, according to CGN.
