Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Winston Peters, New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, in Beijing on Wednesday. The meeting focused on fostering mutual respect and equality, emphasizing that all countries, regardless of size or strength, have the right to choose their own development paths.
Wang highlighted the importance of strengthening multilateral coordination amidst the current complex and dynamic international landscape. He also pointed out that China's ongoing high-level opening-up and its expansive market continue to provide significant opportunities for cooperation with New Zealand.
Expressing a commitment to supporting Chinese students and overseas Chinese, Wang underscored the Asia-Pacific region as a common home for both nations. He also acknowledged China's respect for New Zealand's traditional relations with Pacific island countries.
Winston Peters remarked on the substantial progress made since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. He reiterated New Zealand's adherence to the one-China policy and expressed optimism about enhancing cooperation in areas such as economics, trade, agriculture, defense, and the Antarctic.
The two ministers agreed to maintain high-level exchanges and to collaborate on China's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA). This cooperation aims to further develop and strengthen New Zealand-China relations through enhanced communication and coordination in regional and international affairs.
