Ramaphosa and Wang Yi Pledge to Deepen China-South Africa Cooperation

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday, pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Johannesburg, where Wang Yi also holds a position as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

President Ramaphosa expressed heartfelt gratitude to China for its unwavering support in South Africa's struggle for national independence and its significant assistance in accelerating national development. Highlighting the high-level mutual trust between the two nations, Ramaphosa affirmed South Africa's commitment to the one-China policy and reiterated his country's willingness to enhance practical cooperation with China, aiming to advance the all-round strategic partnership between the two nations.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi acknowledged the strong mutual understanding and support between China and South Africa, emphasizing their close exchanges, communication, and coordination that reflect the high caliber of their bilateral relations. In light of the current complex and volatile international landscape, Wang affirmed China's commitment to maintaining its strategic focus and managing its own affairs diligently.

He further noted China's pursuit of comprehensive modernization and its readiness to collaborate with South Africa and other nations to promote global modernization. Wang lauded South Africa's adherence to the one-China principle and its historical stance, affirming China’s enduring role as a trustworthy partner in South Africa’s development trajectory.

As key members of the Global South, Wang emphasized China's support for South Africa in fulfilling its G20 presidency responsibilities, prioritizing development on the international agenda, amplifying the voice of the Global South, enhancing unity among developing nations, and urging the G20 to foster global growth and improve people's well-being.

The discussions underscored the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between South Africa and China, paving the way for increased cooperation and mutual support in the years ahead.
