Chinese Foreign Minister Advocates for Equitable Global Governance at UN Meeting

At a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need to reinvigorate true multilateralism and accelerate the creation of a more just and equitable global governance system.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, delivered his remarks during the session titled \"Practicing multilateralism, reforming and improving global governance.\" Highlighting the upcoming 80th anniversary of the United Nations in 2025, he underscored the significance of the UN-centered international system in safeguarding human progress amidst a turbulent global landscape.

He stated, \"The 80 years of history is enlightenment enough. In the face of the turbulent and changing international landscape, the UN-centered international system provides important safeguards for the cause of human progress, and the vision of multilateralism with coordination and cooperation as its cornerstone is the best solution to global issues.\"

Wang further elaborated on the importance of mutual cooperation, stating that no country can prosper alone in the context of a shared future. He stressed that the Global South should not only strive for modernization collectively but also lead efforts to enhance the global governance system.

In his speech, Wang presented a four-point proposal:

  • Upholding Sovereign Equality: Ensuring that all countries participate, make decisions, and benefit as equals in global governance, respecting each nation’s chosen development path and adhering to the principle of non-interference.
  • Upholding Fairness and Justice: Reforming the Security Council to enhance democratic consultation, increase representation of developing countries, and address historical injustices.
  • Upholding Solidarity and Coordination: Promoting extensive consultation and joint contributions, replacing confrontation with coordination, and fostering win-win cooperation.
  • Upholding an Action-Oriented Approach: Focusing on practical solutions through UN agencies to address wars, loss of innocent lives, and challenges posed by new technologies.

Addressing specific global issues, Wang advocated for the two-state solution in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question to achieve enduring peace and security in the region.

Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Wang reiterated China’s consistent call for a political settlement and support for peace talks, advocating for efforts conducive to peace.

Wang highlighted China’s contributions to global governance through initiatives like the Community with a Shared Future for Mankind, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. He affirmed China’s commitment to peace, security, common development, openness, inclusiveness, and multilateral cooperation.

Concluding his speech, Wang expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with all parties to draw lessons from history, usher in a new era of multilateralism, and strive for a more fair and equitable global governance system as the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary.
