China has called on Japan to uphold the one-China principle and adhere to the spirit of the four political documents between the two nations, following proposed revisions to Japan's family law regulations. A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry emphasized that Japan should cease any interference in the Taiwan question.
During a regular press briefing on Monday, spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the Japanese Ministry of Justice's initiative to allow regions such as Taiwan and Palestine to be listed as places of origin in family law documents. This change would enable individuals from Taiwan to declare their origin as Taiwan instead of China.
Guo reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and that compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same Chinese nation. He emphasized that the Taiwan question is an internal affair of China that does not tolerate foreign interference.
The spokesperson also highlighted Japan's historical responsibilities, noting its past aggression and colonial rule over Taiwan. Guo urged Japan to act prudently regarding the Taiwan issue, stressing the importance of maintaining consistent and clear policies.
\"We urge the Japanese side to abide by the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan. No gimmicks on the Taiwan question, and do not send any conflicting or wrong signals,\" Guo Jiakun stated.
