The Chinese mainland has formally requested the United States to correct its recent updates to the Taiwan fact sheet on the U.S. State Department website. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted that the so-called \"update\" is perceived as an attempt by the U.S. to use the Taiwan issue to contain China.
According to reports, the U.S. State Department modified the Taiwan fact sheet by removing previous statements affirming that the United States does not support Taiwan's independence. Guo Jiakun reiterated China's steadfast position that there is only one China, with Taiwan being an integral part of it. He emphasized that the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entire nation.
Guo further stated that the one-China principle is a prevailing international consensus and a fundamental norm governing international relations. He pointed out that the United States has committed to this principle through the three China-U.S. joint communiqués.
The spokesperson criticized the U.S. Department of State's revision of the Taiwan fact sheet, describing it as a significant retreat from its established stance on Taiwan-related matters. He warned that such actions send a misleading signal to separatist forces advocating for \"Taiwan independence.\"
Urging the United States to immediately address these issues, Guo Jiakun called on the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and honor the commitments outlined in the joint communiqués. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to cease upgrading substantive relations with Taiwan, refrain from assisting Taiwan in expanding its international presence, and stop supporting movements aiming for Taiwan's independence. Guo concluded by highlighting that continued actions of this nature could severely harm China-U.S. relations and disrupt peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
