At the Munich Security Conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China’s commitment to collaborating with Austria in upholding multilateralism. During a meeting with Austrian interim Chancellor and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, Wang highlighted the importance of maintaining the authority of the United Nations and defending the international rule of law.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, addressed the overlapping security challenges and economic risks facing the global community. He underscored the international community's desire for peace and stability amidst concerns of division and confrontation.
Highlighting the timely focus on multipolarization at this year’s Munich Security Conference, Wang reaffirmed China’s aspirations for peaceful development. He praised Austria’s role as a permanently neutral country and a bridge-builder in international affairs.
China welcomed Austria’s willingness to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and advance bilateral relations. Wang also noted the significance of this year marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, expressing readiness to work with EU countries to invigorate these relations over the next five decades.
In response, Schallenberg affirmed the respect and close cooperation between Austria and China on both bilateral and multilateral issues. He emphasized that decoupling and severing industrial and supply chains are against common interests, advocating for open cooperation to achieve development and prosperity.
Schallenberg appreciated China’s adherence to multilateralism and expressed Austria’s willingness to collaborate in upholding the UN Charter’s principles and defending the post-World War II international order. He highlighted the importance of China’s role in promoting peace through Eastern wisdom.
The discussions between the two officials also covered the situation in the Middle East and other pertinent global issues, reflecting their mutual commitment to addressing complex international challenges through dialogue and cooperation.
