The Chinese military has voiced strong opposition to the recent passage of a United States warship and an oceanographic survey ship through the Taiwan Straits, citing increased security risks and misleading signals.
Senior Colonel Li Xi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), made the remarks on Wednesday. He asserted that the PLA Eastern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to diligently track and monitor the movements of the USS Ralph Johnson, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, and the USNS Bowditch, a Pathfinder-class survey ship, during their transit from February 10 to 12.
Colonel Li emphasized that the PLA effectively responded to and managed the situation, ensuring that national sovereignty and security were upheld. He further stated that the troops of the PLA Eastern Theater Command remain on high alert at all times to resolutely safeguard regional peace and stability.
The passage of US naval vessels through the Taiwan Straits continues to be a point of contention, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions in the region. The PLA’s response underscores China's commitment to monitoring and addressing activities it deems provocative within its perceived territorial waters.
