Chinese Mainland Opposes US-Japan Joint Statement on Taiwan Participation

The Chinese mainland has strongly opposed the latest joint statement issued by the United States and Japan, which concerns Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed that the statement constitutes blatant interference in China's internal affairs.

The joint declaration, released last week, supports Taiwan's so-called \"meaningful participation\" in global bodies and reaffirms that Article V of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security applies to the Diaoyu Dao, an inherent part of China's territory.

At a daily news briefing, Guo criticized the joint statement for smearing China and exacerbating regional tensions. He emphasized that the Taiwan question is strictly an internal matter of China and is central to its core interests, warning against any external interference.

Guo noted that China has formally lodged representations with Japan regarding the statement. He reiterated that the participation of the Taiwan region in international organizations must align with the one-China principle, asserting that Taiwan lacks the grounds to join organizations limited to sovereign states.

Highlighting the territorial integrity of the Diaoyu Dao and its affiliated islands, Guo affirmed China's legitimate and lawful activities in the relevant waters. He urged the United States and Japan to adhere to the one-China principle, cease interfering in China's internal affairs, and take concrete actions to promote regional peace and development.
