Harbin’s Booming Ice Industry Boosts China’s Economy Ahead of Asian Winter Games

Harbin, the capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, stands as a testament to the country's flourishing ice and snow economy. During the eight-day 2025 Spring Festival holiday from January 28 to February 4, the city experienced a surge in snow tourism. The renowned Harbin Ice-Snow World, famous for its impressive ice sculptures, attracted over 610,000 visitors, with a record-breaking 100,000 visits on February 1 alone.

The rising popularity of Harbin's ice attractions is further spurred by the city's upcoming role as the host of the 9th Asian Winter Games, scheduled from February 7 to 14. This event marks China's second major winter sports celebration following the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to attend the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games and will host a welcome banquet for the foreign leaders in attendance, underscoring the significance of the event in boosting the region's economic and cultural stature.
